We've all heard about overnight internet success. 10 000 + visitors a month. Google Ad Sales. Hundreds of Thousands of Rand's if not Millions in Website generated revenue. All from a Website.
Yet, when it comes to a bona fide small or medium sized business, too many new clients, all at once could spell disaster.
The truth is, that when it comes to a small business just two or three new customers a week, week after week, is all it takes to make a huge impact.
But, before we built this Website, this had not occurred to us. We had no idea about how big of an impact ranking at #1 on localized search would have on them.

So when this small business of 8 years + came to us to do a website and get it ranked, we had no idea how their lives would change.

Don't be fooled.
The graph above is awful. After three months on the web and only a miserly 17 visitors for the whole month. Even worse is that after 4 months the figure drops to below 10.
We had a good idea that the visitors to the site were mostly the client and their family. As you can see from the graph above, four months down the line and even the client has stopped looking at it anymore.
It goes without saying that not a single call came in from a new, web generated, customer during that time.

Having invested in a website , it's never fun coming to the realization that your site is not the "latest trend".
With close to a million new URL's (website addresses) created everyday. Getting seen on the first page of Google right after launching, is highly unlikely.

As quickly as one can become disillusioned at the sheer weight of internet competitors, understanding what influences Googles decisions can just as quickly, restore hope.
When you're a small business, investing in an untried advertising medium (like a new website) is daunting. It becomes even more of a challenge when you have to invest even more on something called SEO.
Especially when it gets explained to you that SEO is not guaranteed.

We personally know of a well established business of 20 years + who, despite being a leader in their industry, ranks at #39 for their major keyword phrase. We've been tracking them for close to 10 years and they have never come close to the first page of Google.
COST EFFECTIVE SEO DOESN'T NEED TO BREAK THE BANK
Still on a tight budget, our client let us implement a few cost effective optimizations.
Optimizations happened on the 30 of October 2017 and by the 6th November they were at position #53 and #29 for two keyword phrases.
That might sound great but when it comes to the "Google Game" #29 (aka page 3) might as well be the north pole.
Despite this, stats showed that visitors were still visiting the site.
What was going on we wondered. A glitch? A Spam bot? (Spam Robot Program that visits your website and makes it look like you had visitors on your site)
There were still no inquiries at all. Was someone playing with our analytics data?
Or was our carefully designed and researched website beating out the competition with it's brilliant attention to visitor requirements? It was anyone's guess.
And then December arrived and everyone went on holiday.
However site visitors continued to increase. (Clearly not everyone was on holiday.)
This company always comes back to work a week before most other companies do. So the first week of 2018 was nothing special.
Then the second week of January started and the phones started ringing.
Every day brought one, two or even three new customer requests. With the highest inquiries in a week being 17 including those that came in from the website contact form.
The log book was getting fuller and fuller.
Concerns started being raised at the ability to cope with all the new business.
Until eventually requests from new clients had to be turned away.
The company had reached it's capacity less than 90 days after the start of the new year.

Yes, this article makes it sound like it was all SEO that did the trick.
But Google developers have made sure that there's no amount of SEO in the world that will compensate for a poorly designed website.
Google is big business.
They got to be big business by giving the customer what they want.
Think about it from your point of view.
You're looking for a plumber, You google "plumber" and you get tons of listings but everything that comes up leaves you just as clueless about what costs you're in for, than you were before you started.
You might as well have picked up the telephone directory for all the good Google was.
Google knows that.
What they did, was they created programs to index websites. They analysed their search requests and put everything together.
So when you search for plumber. The first listings (after the Ads) are likely to be websites that have prices.
Next Google knows you'd prefer a plumber that doesn't have to drive half way around Johannesburg to get to you. Again they match up your locations.
This attention to your requirements is what got Google to where they are today.
So having a website that is not user friendly, is boring, hard to navigate or any of a hundred other little things is ultimately going to impact on your ranking.
Site visitors can come and go in the blink of an eye.
Our websites are designed to make their journey through your site as pleasant as possible without wasting their time or internet data.
Google sees that, and as a result our websites eventually end up ranking well, even without SEO. But it takes much longer. A year to two years is not unheard of. Provided a competitor doesn't come along and deliberately work the website out of it's position.
WEBSITE DESIGN AND SEO WORK HAND IN HAND
As mentioned earlier. The majority of business owners will reject the idea of spending money on an unproven advertising medium.
But lets look at the realities of this decision.
Here's the data for a website that was redesigned by us two years ago. The sites doing great on Google and ranks in positions #2, #4 and #8 for word variations of it's top product. Line items 2, 4 and 6 in the image below.
Not bad for a website that had no SEO besides the Optimization that was built into it.
In the last 28 days Google has recorded over 150 clicks to their site. Not bad at all.
But lets look at the snippet of report. What are they losing out on.
Line Item #2) Shows that each month there are an average of 20 searches for this keyword. This variant (way people spell the word) average position is 10 or 11 on the page and gets 12.31% of those 20 searches and Google's recorded 8 clicks or 40%. Yet Google maintains that they are only getting 12.31% of the clicks.
Why? Why are they not in the top position. As their web designer we know how dedicated to service this company is. We also know how high their quality is and how they've spent years maintaining that quality.
Line Item #4) Shows that there are 10 searches monthly. With their brilliant website design they have picked up 40% of the clicks so far this month. Yet Google says they're only getting 18.18%.
Line Item # 6) This is where they lose out the most. 70 searches on average a month and yet even though they have an average 6.8 position on the page, they are only picking up 2.06% of the clicks. That's at least 68 people who don't even click into their site.
Without SEO we wont know the answer. What we do know is that based on the last 28 days data there were 94 clicks (People) that went somewhere else. As opposed to the 14 clicks that chose their website.
